Making their debut appearance onto the designer breed scene during the 1990’s, the ever popular Poochon has graced the dog world with its fun loving and sweet personality for over two decades. A cross between the beautiful Bichon Frise and the intelligent Poodle (Miniature or Toy), this sweet little pup is sure to remain among the top of the list of the most sought after Poodle mixes.
Though they are small in stature they are large in personality. The Poochon is outgoing, sociable and friendly and does well with children and other pets. Their jovial personality isn’t easily dissuaded as they are always looking to learn and have fun and are eager to please their owners. Having adopted their intelligence from both parents they are very easily trainable, though it is recommended to start them very young as their attention can quickly be stolen. They are very curious and very quick, which can lead them into bouts of mischief if not properly trained or supervised.
These designer canines are also known for their ability to excel in canine sports including agility, flyball, and obedience training. To successfully train a Poochon, it is important to keep their training lessons short and as fun as possible, and avoid repetition, as they can quickly lose interest. As with any dog, be sure to use positive reinforcement to reap positive benefits of training. The Poochon like most other breeds will not do well with negative interaction and may develop anxiety driven behaviors if treated poorly.
Due to their high levels of energy they need plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation. Walks partnered with some active play each day is usually enough to keep these little ones occupied and out of trouble. A fenced in yard is great for this breed to romp around and explore on their own. A visit to the local dog park is also a great way to keep these pooches socialized and happy. Having plenty of toys is also important to keep them active minds mentally stimulated.
They are highly adaptable dogs and do well in most all settings. They can live in a city apartment or a rural country home. As long as they are given plenty of exercise and time to burn some energy they will be happy wherever their family is.
Because they are a hybrid mix, they are of recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). However, they are widely recognized in plenty of other clubs including the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and the International Designer Canine Registry. They are even more widely recognized in local clubs particularly in the United Kingdom.
