Gearing up for a Summer Road Trip with Fido

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The warm weather is finally here, the kids are out of school and vacation is right around the corner! Like many fellow animal lovers we consider our pets to be part of the family and want to include them in as many family activities as we can. Being aware of your pets needs will assure a successful trip.

Have updated vaccinations and tags

It is important to have copies of your pet’s vaccination records in the event they need medical attention or need to be boarded for a day. It is equally important to make sure there are identification tags on your pet. If they have a microchip, make sure the contact and vet information is updated.

Make frequent rest stops

If you need a rest, chances are your pet does too. They also need time to get out and stretch their legs and run
about. It is primal instinct for a dog to walk and exercise ever day- a road trip is no exception.

Give them space

Nobody likes to be crammed in a car with little room to move, including your pet. Giving them ample space to move around (not to be confused with free roam of the vehicle, which can be dangerous) will calm any anxiety your pet may have and allow a more comfortable ride for everyone.

Make sure they have plenty of water!

Please don’t wait to stop to give your pet access to water. Keep a small sturdy bowl in the vehicle that allows constant access to water.

Keep your pets favorite toys and treats on hand

A road trip with the family can be very exciting for your pet, but it can also make them very nervous as they don’t understand where they are going. Keeping some familiarity in their life will help them to feel more at ease.

Be aware of the rules of pets along your journey

Don’t wait until the last minute to see if your destinations are pet friendly. The last thing you should do is leave your pet in the car, especially on a hot day!

Find a local dog park

Chances are your pet will need to blow of some steam too! Finding a local park for them to run freely will allow them to burn some energy and meet some new friends. It is their vacation too…

A vacation should be fun for the whole family, fur family included. These tips should make for a pleasant ride for your fur baby and the rest of the family.
