Are All Poodle Related Breeds Hypoallergenic?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

All dogs disperse one form of allergens or the other into the air. These allergens or dander could be in their saliva, fur or even waste and a certain percentage of humans have proven to be allergic or reactive to these allergens and thus make them incapable of cohabiting with dogs. However, even as all dog breeds possess dander, some breeds have it in less quantity than others, thus making them a healthier choice for people with dog allergies.

One breed which has proven to be mostly hypoallergenic is the Poodle as they shed less and as a contradiction, require a lot of grooming. Thus, with the evolution of genetics, the crossing of other breeds with the Poodle to create a Hypoallergenic hybrid has been in high demand. So far they’re Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever + Poodle mix), Aussiedoodles (Australian Retriever/Poodle mix), Bernedoodles (Bernese Mountain Dog/Poodle), Sheepadoodles (Old English Sheepdog/Poodle) and so many more Poodle hybrids in existence and the question everyone wants answered is ‘Are all these mixes hypoallergenic?” This piece aims at highlighting the gradient of genetics in puppy designer breeds in a bid to set the record straight.

The truth

Asides from being more hypoallergenic than other dog breeds, Poodles have a lot of other covetous qualities. This includes their title of being the most intelligent dog breed, their implication of luxury, their beautiful fur, and also their competitive skills. They are well-rounded breeds and breeders mix them for tons of reasons and not just for their hypoallergenic genes. Now for Poodle mixes and Hybrids, there are certain factors to consider. These mixes aren’t purebred which means they have distinct parents from different breeds. Each parent contributes a certain percentage of individual features to the offspring and it’s somewhat impossible to completely predict which features will be dominant. However, with the recent advancements in genetics, it’s only a matter of time before the situation changes and scientists are able to screen features.

Until then we have to come to terms with the fact that even as the poodle is hypoallergenic, although not fully, it’s mixed offspring may not possess these same tendencies. And even if the mixed offspring turns out to be mild on individuals with dog allergies, its hypoallergenic quality may not still match that of its Poodle parent.

Thus to answer the premise, No, not all Poodle mixes are hypoallergenic. Some are very intelligent, fluffy or really competitive and you cannot know which you’re getting until they’re born. Poodles are amazing breeds and although these mixes are only half Poodle, half any other breed, they’re guaranteed to be just as amazing as their Poodle Parent. It’s just in their genes.
